The mask mandate to enter businesses that went into effect in December ended today and some local businesses owners were happy to see it go.

David Howe, owner of Charles Men’s Shop, 200 East Main St. in Batavia, said the shop is relieved that the mandate is going away. Shop staff never enforced the mandate if anyone came in without a mask, nor did they ask anyone to show his or her vaccination card, he said.

“That’s not our job,” he said of enforcing the mandate. “We put out the signs on the front door … We basically said … ‘Per Governor Hochul, please wear a mask in indoor spaces.’ We wanted people to know what the mandate was, but we’re not going to be the vaccination police.”

Howe said the shop removed those signs Wednesday morning.
