The governor of Alabama, the least vaccinated state in the US, has blamed “unvaccinated folks” for a recent rise in Covid-19 cases.
Kay Ivey said “folks are supposed to have common sense” when asked by a reporter what it would take to get more people in the state to get vaccinated.
“It’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks, not the regular folks. It’s the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down,” she said at a press conference on Friday.
Asked whether she considered it her responsibility, as governor, to try and help bring the situation under control, Ivey said, “I’ve done all I know how to do.
“I can encourage you to do something, but I can’t make you take care of yourself,” the Republican governor continued.
The comments may represent some of Ivey’s sternest words on her state’s lagging vaccine rollout, but also highlight the swirling debate in the US between encouragement and mandates on…
