An Ocean County man with a learning disability and health issues has filed suit against the Dollar General Corporation, claiming he was fired from the Point Pleasant store for being “too slow” at his job as a stocking clerk.
Eric Sica, 38, of Brick, said in court papers he disclosed during his job interview that he was born with spinal meningitis, a serious medical condition caused by an infection of the fluid membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
The condition led to lifelong learning disabilities, hearing loss and vision impairment, according to the lawsuit filed April 14 in Superior Court in Ocean County.
Sica said he wrote on his job application that he receives Social Security benefits due to his disabilities, could work limited hours each week and was unable to work shifts that required him to drive at night because of his vision problems.
