Coloradans have suffered greatly from the opioid epidemic, and even widespread knowledge of the dangerous addictiveness of the drugs has not slowed the deadly curse of overdoses.

In Colorado, a known 7,606 people died of opioid overdoses between 2000 and 2020, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Tragically 956 of those deaths came in 2020, a year when no one can plead ignorance of the dangers of these drugs.

Doctors have finally started tightening their prescription of pharmaceutical opioids and paramedics are equipped with life-saving drugs like naloxone. Advances in addiction treatment, including the use of methadone, have pulled countless individuals from the clutches of this disease.

And yet, opioid overdose deaths continue to climb in this state.

There is hope on the horizon — an estimated $385 million to $400 million for addiction treatment and overdose prevention coming from settlements…
