A Michigan business owner and personal injury attorney with offices in Southfield was convicted of tax crimes Nov. 16 at the conclusion of a jury trial in federal court.

Carl L. Collins, III was found guilty of willfully filing five false tax returns for himself and one of his businesses.

According to a news release from the Department of Justice, Collins owned a real estate company, First Third LLC and two medical-related companies — MedCity Rehabilitation Services LLC in Highland Park and Alpha Living LLC in Southfield. During his trial, evidence showed Collins didn’t report a substantial amount of income from the businesses and deposited it into undisclosed Interest on Lawyer’s Trust Accounts, which are bank accounts used by attorneys solely to hold money in trust for clients.
